The Armory Center for the Arts, housed in Pasadena’s historic 1932 National Guard Building, serves as the city’s hub for art education in its myriad forms. It originated as the education department of the Pasadena Art Museum in 1947 with classes led by artists whose teaching concepts grew out of the museum's exhibitions of modern art. This education program became known as the Pasadena Art Workshops after the museum closed in 1974. Without a permanent space for exhibitions, the workshops used professional artists as teachers and focused on the development of arts programs that presented alternative forms of learning. By working in partnerships with schools, libraries, parks, neighborhood groups, community centers, and city agencies, the museum’s programs brought the arts to new audiences – a trend that continues to this day.

Opening in its permanent space on Raymond Avenue in 1989, the center underwent a $2.4 million transformation in 2002 to create an additional 6,800 square feet of classrooms and studio spaces for drawing and painting, digital arts, and photography. Today it offers a wide range of programs and studio classes for all ages (in-person and online), as well as exhibitions in its galleries, year around.  Galleries are open by appointment Fridays from 3:00 to 7:00pm, Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 to 5:00pm. Admission is always free.

Arguably the most distinctive and historic structure in Old Pasadena, Castle Green turns heads with its architectural pedigree and prowess: Experts note styles that range from Moorish and Spanish Colonial to Mediterranean Revival and Victorian, the latter especially evident inside. The building’s turrets, arches,  balconies, and seven imposing stories make it a true visual stunner from the street.

Today the former hotel serves as a very popular venue for special events, and its history makes it popular with visitors and locals alike. The Castle Green is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the State Historic Register, and the City of Pasadena's list of Historic Places. It is only open to the public a few times a year - the annual Holiday Tour in December and the Spring Tour.

Castle Green was designed and built by famed architect Frederick Roehrig and opened in 1899 as the second of three buildings belonging to the luxury Hotel Green complex. It is one of the oldest standing historic landmarks in Los Angeles County and has many of the original features from its construction: gorgeous plaster moldings, hand-carved fireplace mantles, grills and wood moldings, original lighting, and the oldest wrought-iron, man-operated elevator on the West Coast. Hotel Green served as one of Pasadena’s premier resorts, attracting wealthy Midwesterners and East Coasters who loved vacationing in sunny California. At the time, it was the only fireproof hotel in California, a very substantial claim for that era made especially important following the fire that destroyed another local luxury hotel, the Royal Raymond, in 1895.

Today, only Castle Green – once known as the “Central Annex” – remains from the hotel’s hey day; it now houses condominiums and private residences. Its public rooms and gardens are available for weddings, receptions, corporate meetings, and reunions.

Serving as one of the oldest congregations in Pasadena, Friendship Pasadena Church was founded in September 1893 and stands today as one of Pasadena’s landmark churches. It was the first Negro Baptist Church in the city and for many years had the largest membership of any African American church. Throughout its history, the church has played an important religious and civic role in Pasadena.

The church grew and prospered under the leadership of several ministers until the 1920s, when Reverend W.H. Tillman led the members to acquire a new site on Dayton Street and erect the present edifice, which was designed by Norman F. Marsh in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. Its design includes a tower, a bell-gable, a tile roof, and stained-glass windows. Martin Luther King, Jr. made two notable visits to Friendship Church, once in 1960 and again in 1965, solidifying the church’s important role in the Civil Rights Movement.

Friendship Pasadena Church became the first African American-related Cultural Landmark designated in Pasadena. It is also recognized as a State of California landmark and in 1978 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During the 1990s, the church underwent a complete renovation and today, still operates as a thriving congregation.

The Pasadena Senior Center (PSC) is a vital community asset.  As a donor supported nonprofit organization, the PSC does not receive local, state or federal funding for their operations and is not a city-operated facility. Every effort is made to keep membership and class fees as low as possible so that everyone can participate. While those fees help, they do not cover the operating costs of the Center.  Private donations, foundation grants, corporate sponsorships, and community philanthropy are essential to support the Center’s operational expenses, as well as social wellness programs.  Social wellness ensures: social connectedness; optimal quality of life; and maximized independence.

Every year, more than 10,000 older adults age 50+ from a variety of backgrounds, with differing needs, abilities and interests come to PSC for a sense of community and so much more.  PSC provides the opportunity to: continue lifelong learning; discover new opportunities for social interaction; and engage in a multitude of activities to keep their minds sharp, bodies healthy and spirits soaring.
