From Wildfire to Revival: Dena Is Rising

In January 2025, the Eaton Fire tore through over 1,000 acres of Altadena. It destroyed homes. It shattered landscapes. But the real loss—the one not captured in headlines—was deeper. This fire struck at the heart of one of Southern California’s most powerful legacies of historically rooted families.

Altadena isn’t just a place. It’s a story of ownership, pride, and culture passed down through generations.

    And now, we are rebuilding.

You are invited to attend a unique musical discussion and performance at the Rudolf Steiner Community Center titled "The Human Being as a Musical Being," a public talk and demonstration with Margaret Shipman.

Tones make up the physical world, yet we cannot weigh, measure, nor often even recognize them. We will explore the mystery of the keys of music, beginning with the layout of the piano keyboard. Through examples of music, we will hear how the mood of E Flat Minor affects us very differently than the mood of D Major. We can begin to understand how the planets and stars sing to one another - and to us!

Margaret Shipman started playing both cello and piano in grade school and graduated from Eastman School of Music. She practiced violin making and restoration with Hans Weisshaar in Los Angeles for 21 years. They co-authored a book on restoration techniques and, upon his death, she continued running the shop for another 15 years before passing it to the next generation. Margaret has studied the work of Rudolf Steiner for 25 years and considers it the core of her life.

This discussion and performance take place on Saturday, April 26, 4:00-6:00 PM. The talk will be followed with a performance of Beethoven’s Sonata for Cello and Piano by Margaret Shipman and Jay Kohorn.  This is a free event, but donations are welcome.
