Pasadena Museum of History invites visitors to bask in the joyful ambiance of quintessential childhood amusements in a uniquely “touchable” exhibition, Giddy Up: Children Take the Reins.

The PMH galleries will be filled with a dizzying array of more than 35 smaller-scaled carousel horses and exotic creatures that visitors of all ages will be able to see and touch. An enchanting photo booth will feature a double-seat Polar Bear from an English carousel by J.R. Anderson, circa 1920, that children and adults can climb on for a special keepsake photo.

A selection of ride-on horses/animals that rock, bounce, and/or roll, along with a wide variety of animals and carousel-themed toys, will also be on view. Today we might call these the ‘interactive’ toys and amusements of yesteryear. They were specifically designed to spark children’s imaginations, encouraging youngsters to “take the reins" and create their own unique stories and fictional characters as they pretended to be their favorite cowboy film stars or other fictional characters.

Giddy Up is PMH's second exhibition devoted solely to items from curator Lourinda Bray’s collection. Her Running Horse Studio in Irwindale, CA houses her nearly unimaginable menagerie, along with carousel art, miniatures, toys, and more in 7,000 square feet of merry-go-round memorabilia. Here she carefully restores figures for other collectors and for operational carousels, as well as pieces in her own collection, which spans the history of carousels from the mid-nineteenth century to modern day, with many examples from the “Golden Age of Carousels,” 1861-1920.

The museum's galleries are open Wednesday-Sunday, 12:00-5:00pm. The exhibition is free the first Wednesday of each month to people who live, work, or go to school in Pasadena and surrounding communities (Community Wednesdays).

Then try your hand at your own shadow stories at The Shadow Jam DIY experience, where you can learn the ways of shadow play.

About Rogue Artists EnsembleRogue Artists Ensemble differs from other theater companies in that it's run by a collective of multi-disciplinary artists and designers rather than by actors, writers, or directors. By combining ancient storytelling techniques (music, dance, masks, puppetry) with modern technology (digital media, special effects, and theatrical illusions), the Rogues cultivate a unique style of live performance unlike any other.

Since 2002, the Rogues have created over a dozen original new works and collaborated with hundreds of artists and community members. In 2018, Rogue Artists Ensemble recently finished a successful remount of their macabre Pinocchio adaptation, Wood Boy Dog Fish, included as the summer show in Inaugural Season of the Garry Marshall Theatre. In October 2018, Rogue Artists premiered its site-specific, immersive piece, Señor Plummer’s Final Fiesta, a project commissioned by the City of West Hollywood to celebrate the namesake of Plummer Park. Rogue Artists Ensemble is committed to sharing the arts with the community and provides educational opportunities and workshops, and always offers discount tickets for all main stage work.

In 2018 the Rogues launched their first writers’ group and development lab, resulting in six new Hyper-theater plays. The Rogues are currently in development of several new works including an upcoming workshop of Cowboy Elektra a collision of old west mythos and the Elektra story, at the Getty Villa in January 2020.

LA Opera Talk: Light in the Piazza

    1:00pm–2:00pm

The Pasadena Senior Center hosts "LA Opera Talk: Light in the Piazza."  An LA Opera community educator will share insights into the upcoming production of Adam Guettel’s “Light in the Piazza” starring Renee Fleming, Dove Cameron, and Brian Stokes Mitchell.  The story is set in the 1950s and revolves around a wealthy Southern woman and her developmentally disabled adult daughter. They spend a summer together in Italy, where the daughter falls in love with a young Italian man, forcing her mother to reconsider the young woman’s future, as well as her own deep-seated hopes and regrets.
