Art in the Street: 25 Years of the Pasadena Chalk Festival

    to
    12:00am–11:59pm

Gallery open Wednesday - Sunday, 12:00-5:00pm

The Pasadena Chalk Festival, one of the area’s most popular arts attractions, will celebrate its silver anniversary in 2017. The festival began as a small event with a humble launch in front of Pasadena City Hall in 1993.The unique event now includes about 600 visual artists a year and attracts tens of thousands of visitors to the Civic Center over the two-day festival weekend. Light Bringer Project, founders and organizers of the Pasadena Chalk Festival, will team with PMH to produce an exhibit exploring the history and impact of the festival's medium.

This centuries-old style of street art, also known as pavement art and street painting, can also be viewed as a type of performance art. Artists use impermanent materials such as pastel chalk to create a variety of images and designs on streets and boulevards, sidewalks, plazas, and public spaces. For the past 25 years, the Pasadena Chalk Festival has celebrated this medium, attracting artists and design teams from many regions of the country. Leading art schools, museums, and cultural centers are also represented in the annual event.

The creation and installation of chalk murals, some of which are site specific, and chalk drawing demonstrations will be featured. Photographs, a video history, and artists’ stories will be included.

Major accomplishments highlighted in the exhibit include breaking the Guinness Book of World Records in 2010 and presenting centerpiece artists like the Aboriginal team from Alice Springs and their “dream painting.” A special “tools of the trade” display will give visitors an inside look at the art form’s process and techniques. Artists will demonstrate chalk drawing, and the public will be encouraged to join in (chalk materials provided) on specific dates throughout the run of the exhibition.

The Armory Center for the Arts presents "Down and to the Left: Reflections on Mexico in the NAFTA Era," documenting the 1990s, an era of fervent change and crisis throughout Mexico.

The 1990s were a period of fervent change and crisis throughout Mexico. With the decade's emergent transnationalism and neoliberal thrust, boundaries between the local and global all but vanished. The formal push of NAFTA ushered in that process and helped define that decade in Mexico and throughout North America. Many in Mexico—artists, activists, and others—reacted against it, predicting a disaster. The works included here depict the socioeconomic and political climate of the era.

Exhibiting artists include Carlos Aguirre, Yollotl Alvarado, Judith Barry, Nao Bustamante, Cráter Invertido, Minerva Cuevas, Rafael Doniz, Andrés Garay, Maya Goded, Lourdes Grobet, Luis G. Hernandez, Fred Lonidier, Pedro Meyer, Sarah Minter, Grupo Proceso Pentágono, Daniela Rossell, Javier Téllez, Antonio Turok, and Pedro Valtierra. This exhibition was conceived of and organized by Irene Tsatsos, Director of Exhibition Programs/Chief Curator, and co-organized with contributing curator Daniela Lieja.

Flower Pepper Gallery is pleased to present "Wanderlust,"a solo show by Valerie Pobjoy. This exhibition showcases the broad talent of one of Los Angeles' most exciting up-and-coming artists and gives us a unique perspective of how she sees the world around her. Rather than adhere to a strict theme, she has given herself the opportunity to paint freely and wander through her many interests.

Through her decision to paint without reserve, we see a collection of work that is both immensely honest and fluid. Our thoughts and dreams are hardly linear or follow any one theme. Like this exhibition, they roam and move freely between reality and fantasy. This body of work acts like a stream of consciousness, and is effortlessly brought together through the lens of the artist and her unique painting style.

asadena Heritage hosts the second of its three 2017 walking tours of Old Pasadena on July 1.

Old Pasadena has gone from drab and dingy to a shopping and dining destination but without Pasadena Heritage, it would have been demolished. When founded 37 years ago, saving Old Pasadena was a top priority. Now it is one of the finest examples of downtown revitalization in the country.

Pasadena was incorporated in 1886 and during the next 14 years the population of Pasadena exploded to more than 30,000 inhabitants. With this tremendous growth in population, Pasadena experienced major expansion and development of its central commercial district centered around Fair Oaks Avenue and Colorado Boulevard. Take a walking tour of Old Pasadena, listed on the National Register of Historic Places with Pasadena Heritage docents, hear the history, and see why we thought it was worth saving!
