    Akunnittinni: A Kinngait Family Portrait

    to
    12:00pm–5:00pm

Akunnittinni: A Kinngait Family Portrait chronicles three generations of Inuit artists—Pitseolak Ashoona (1904-1983), her daughter Napachie Pootoogook (1938-2002), and granddaughter Annie Pootoogook (1969-2016).

The prints and drawings on view depict nuanced depictions of family and village life in Kinngait, as well as sardonic references to pop culture that have now penetrated everyday life in this remote community in the Canadian Arctic. Kinngait is known internationally for its artwork, and the three women in this exhibition are among the most well regarded artists of this region.

Join us at 5:00 pm on Saturday, June 30 for an exhibition walk-through with curator Andrea R. Hanley, followed immediately by an opening reception from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The walk-through and reception are free and open to the public.

Marta Chaffee: The Places We've Lived

    to
    12:00pm–5:00pm

Marta Chaffee’s practice draws from California landscapes and the implied freedom of the American West. This exhibition, organized by her daughter Aandrea Stang, showcases paintings and drawings that relate to the artist's numerous road trips—from mundane, local stoplight views, to vistas inspired by the Golden State Freeway or Interstate 395, which she often traveled to visit family in the Eastern Sierras. In her paintings and drawings, Chaffee has mapped locations she often returned to by necessity or choice, organizing both observed and invented views as seen through her windshield.

Please join the Armory for an opening reception with the artist on Saturday, June 30 from 6:00-8:00 pm. This reception is free an open to the public.

Friendly Skies: The Art of High Altitude Travel

    to

Peekaboo Gallery presents "Friendly Skies: The Art of High Altitude Travel," a travel exhibition and sale dedicated to the golden age of flying. Take a nostalgic look back to the time of glamorous air hostesses and gourmet meals, when one could jaunt from New York to Paris on a supersonic 3.5-hour flight while enjoying champagne and canapés to live organ accompaniment.

The gallery showcases airlines memorabilia and collectibles presented in a striking Jumbo Jet stage set. Inside, you can find original lithographs and paintings of classic travel art, and industrial and commercial aircraft models.

For those interested in nostalgic fashion of the skies, look for vintage flight attendant uniforms from the 1940s through the 1990s, worn by crews on PAN AM, Braniff Airways, TWA, United, Eastern, British Airways, and  the Soviet Aeroflot.

Peekaboo is a unique gallery where everything in the curated displays are for sale. It offers visitors an “unabashed celebration of that most fantastic, turbulent and innovative period in history known as the Twentieth Century.”

Valises for Camp Ground: Arts, Corrections, and Fire Management in the Santa Monica Mountains

    to
    12:00pm–5:00pm

Armory Center for the Arts presents an exhibition in their Community Room titled Valises for Camp Ground: Arts, Corrections, and Fire Management in the Santa Monica Mountains. On display from Saturday, September 1 through Sunday, September 30, the hours are 12:00-5:00pm daily (closed Tuesdays and holidays).

This new work by artist Kim Abeles features ten small, mixed media travel suitcases created during a long-term collaboration between Abeles and the women inmates of Camp 13—a correctional facility in the Santa Monica Mountains for women who are trained and deployed to fight forest fires throughout the region. Many of the inmates from this project went on to fight the devastating wildfires that swept through much of California in 2018. The valises will be used as educational tools at public events by the National Park Service and Los Angeles County Fire Department to teach the public about fire prevention, national forests, and our relationship to nature.

There will be a reception at the Armory with the artist on Saturday, September 15, from 4:00 to 6:00pm. At 3:00pm, just prior to the reception, Ranger Kevin Martinez of Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, and Cathy Schoonmaker, a wildlife biologist for the Santa Monica Mountains Fund (in partnership with the National Park Service), will deliver a presentation about our urban relationship to forests and wildlife. The presentation and reception are both free and open to the public.
