    Akunnittinni: A Kinngait Family Portrait

    to
    12:00pm–5:00pm

Akunnittinni: A Kinngait Family Portrait chronicles three generations of Inuit artists—Pitseolak Ashoona (1904-1983), her daughter Napachie Pootoogook (1938-2002), and granddaughter Annie Pootoogook (1969-2016).

The prints and drawings on view depict nuanced depictions of family and village life in Kinngait, as well as sardonic references to pop culture that have now penetrated everyday life in this remote community in the Canadian Arctic. Kinngait is known internationally for its artwork, and the three women in this exhibition are among the most well regarded artists of this region.

Join us at 5:00 pm on Saturday, June 30 for an exhibition walk-through with curator Andrea R. Hanley, followed immediately by an opening reception from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The walk-through and reception are free and open to the public.

Marta Chaffee: The Places We've Lived

    to
    12:00pm–5:00pm

Marta Chaffee’s practice draws from California landscapes and the implied freedom of the American West. This exhibition, organized by her daughter Aandrea Stang, showcases paintings and drawings that relate to the artist's numerous road trips—from mundane, local stoplight views, to vistas inspired by the Golden State Freeway or Interstate 395, which she often traveled to visit family in the Eastern Sierras. In her paintings and drawings, Chaffee has mapped locations she often returned to by necessity or choice, organizing both observed and invented views as seen through her windshield.

Please join the Armory for an opening reception with the artist on Saturday, June 30 from 6:00-8:00 pm. This reception is free an open to the public.

Something Revealed: California Women Artists Emerge, 1860-1960

    to
    12:00pm–5:00pm

Historically marginalized? Relegated to “Sunday painters”? Encouraged to paint or sculpt children, still-lifes, puppies, kittens, ducklings, and a random landscape? Pasadena Museum of History's exhibition Something Revealed; California Women Artists Emerge, 1860-1960 stands to dispel the misconception that women were limited in their subject matter and demonstrates that women, especially here in California, have historically made their mark in a male-dominated world.  Even today, the role of men in the annals of art history frequently overshadows the artistic accomplishments made by women. The exhibition will show a long history of excellence in female-created art and prove that women could and did contribute to the evolution of style, technique, and exploration in the world of art.

This exhibition of more than 200 pieces showcases just a fraction of the countless number of women who were working in the arts beginning in the mid-nineteenth century in California. Focusing on works produced between the mid-1800s through the 1950s, the exhibition presents an eclectic array of oil paintings, works on paper, ceramics, metal craft, textiles, and sculpture. Curated by Maurine St. Gaudens and accompanied by her four volume book, Emerging from the Shadows; A Survey of Women Artists Working in California, 1860-1960, this exhibition will stimulate conversations and shatter any preconceived notions of the limitations of art created by women.

Galleries are open Wednesdays-Sundays, 12 noon to 5:00pm.

    Old Pasadena Walking Tour

    9:00am–11:15am

Pasadena Heritage hosts its monthly edition of the Old Pasadena Walking Tour, the organization's most popular tour. Explore Old Pasadena with an experienced docent, see the renaissance, and enjoy the architectural variety, fascinating history, virtually unchanged alleyways, and all the authentic details that keep history alive in the 21st Century.

Pasadena's original downtown, once slated for demolition, is now a shopping and dining destination attracting thousands of visitors every month. Without Pasadena Heritage, this National Register Historic District would have been leveled and all its history and architecture destroyed. Instead, today it is one of the finest examples of downtown revitalization in the country.

Ticket information: The cost for the tour is $15 for members and $18 for nonmembers. Reservations are required. Buy your tickets at www.pasadenaheritage.org. To purchase by phone, call Pasadena Heritage at 626.441.6333. Advance reservations are highly recommended.  Please note that the tours are exterior only.
