    to

Flower Pepper Gallery presents "Beasts of the Unknown Curated by Yetis & Friends," a fantastical group exhibition that showcases not-so-everyday creatures that delight and awaken the imagination in all of us.

Tall tales speak of beasts of legend. Whispers by the campfire warn of what lurks in the shadows. Whether gigantic or minuscule, intimidating or friendly as can be; throughout history, imagination has known no limits when it comes to dreaming up the most fantastic creatures. Wondrous monsters have fascinated people for generations and acted as spirit guides, protectors, or eerie warnings to describe phenomenon that could not yet be understood. This exhibition celebrates them all and there is no telling which fascinating beasts will make an appearance.

Whether it’s the charming sculptural work of Daria Lapto and Zoë Williams, or the alternative taxidermy stylings of Sweaty Taxidermy and Valency Genis, there is a creature for everyone and they can’t wait to meet you. Stop by and say hello to all of the Beasts of the Unknown, and who knows, maybe one will just beg to go home with you!

Enjoy the opening reception, free and open to the public, on Saturday, September 23  4:30 pm – 7:30 pm.

Friends in Deed returns once again to historic Castle Green for their annual Jazz on the Green event. Late September is a beautiful time of year in Pasadena and the evenings are perfect for live jazz music, food & drink, seeing old friends while making new friends, taking part in the Silent Auction, and supporting the work they do at Friends In Deed.

2017 Jazz on the Green Honorees:

    • Rev. Donna Byrns
    • San Marino Community Church
    • Western Supreme Rooter, Inc.

Since “jazz” is an integral part of this annual event, Friends in Deed is pleased to have a jazz trio performing that evening. Mr. John Pisano, Mr. Gene Bertoncini, and Mr. John Leftwich, will perform into the night. These gentlemen have been bringing jazz to the world for over a half century.

This fundraising event provides support for Friends In Deed to continue their mission to alleviate the effects of poverty and to encourage self-sufficiency through the collective efforts of congregations, individuals and community organizations.  This event will directly benefit all of our programs which include The Bad Weather Shelter, The Women’s Room, The Food Pantry, Norma’s Nook, and Homeless Prevention Program.

    7:00pm–9:00pm

Conscientious Projector screens "Go Public," a 90-minute documentary showcasing one entire day in the Pasadena Unified School District. Pasadena is a racially and economically diverse community in Southern California with 28 public school campuses. On May 8, 2012, fifty small camera crews followed a wide-ranging group of individuals who participate, attend, support, and work in PUSD. Teachers, students, principals, volunteers and many others revealed their unique involvement in what makes a public school district function.

Admission is free and open to the public. Panel discussion will include State Senator Anthony Portantino and filmmakers Jim and Dawn O’Keeffe.

Presence of the Past - Dayton Street

    6:00pm–7:00pm

Dayton Street, west of Fair Oaks Avenue, was once a center of the African American community in Pasadena, centered around Friendship Baptist Church. Produced by Pasadena Heritage and the City’s Cultural Commission, the video "Presence of the Past - Dayton Street" tells the story of a thriving neighborhood. For more than a decade, from the mid-1980s until its move to the Madison House, Pasadena Heritage’s offices were located in the Church, and is part of its organization's history, too. Come for popcorn, camaraderie, and the re-telling of this chapter of Pasadena history.

Armory Center for the Arts joins the citywide Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA initiative with the exhibition "Below the Underground: Renegade Art and Action in 1990s Mexico."

This exhibition examines diverse independent artist initiatives – from newly acquired brick and mortar spaces, to ad hoc street performances and interventions, living room galleries, clubs, collaboratively produced ‘zines, archives and collections, pirate radio programs, and more. The project also references pronounced divisions of class, race, and gender, with art objects themselves the tangible outcomes of many different conditions of creating, living, and experimenting within the same place.

The Armory Gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday, 12 noon to 5:00PM.

    About Pacific Standard Time LA/LA
Below the Underground: Renegade Art and Action in 1990s Mexico is part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles, taking place from September 2017 through January 2018 at more than 70 cultural institutions across Southern California. Pacific Standard Time is an initiative of the Getty. The presenting sponsor is Bank of America.
