In the 1970s, during a rush of downtown redevelopment, Old Pasadena was scheduled by the city for a final meeting with the wrecking ball. But by 1979 a growing interest in Pasadena’s heritage led the Board of City Directors to unanimously approve an ordinance to preserve the architectural character of Old Pasadena. At the 25th anniversary program of the Pasadena Central Improvement Association in 1981, “It was prophesied Old Pasadena will be recognized as a place that is unique in the United States.”
